Tube Steel vs. Cold Formed vs. Red Iron: Which Metal Building Is Right for You?

July 1, 2026

Choosing the right metal building starts with one decision most buyers overlook: the frame. Walk past the exterior of most metal buildings and they look nearly identical -- corrugated metal panels, clean lines, durable finish. But what holds the building together, determines how wide it can span, and dictates what it can handle structurally comes down entirely to the frame type.

At Silverline Structures, we offer four building systems: Tube Steel, Cold Formed, Red Iron, and Pole Barn. This guide focuses on the three steel frame options and helps you figure out which one fits your project.

What Is Tube Steel?

Tube Steel buildings are constructed from 2.5 inch galvanized tube steel and typically finished with 29-gauge sheet metal paneling. They are the most affordable entry point for smaller structures and are best suited for projects up to 30 feet wide.

This is the right choice if you need a garage, small workshop, RV cover, or basic storage building and want a straightforward, cost-effective solution. Delivery and installation are included in the price, which keeps the buying process simple.

There are a few limitations worth knowing upfront:

  • Best suited for structures 30 feet wide or less -- pricing jumps significantly beyond that
  • Not rated for residential living
  • Some building departments will not permit tube steel structures
  • Not available in all areas, particularly regions with high snow or wind loads

If your project is small, your budget is tight, and your local codes allow it, Tube Steel is hard to beat on value.

What Is Cold Formed Steel?

Cold Formed buildings use components similar to Red Iron construction but with lighter framing -- without sacrificing structural strength. They can span up to 60 to 80 feet wide depending on wind and snow load requirements and can be engineered for anywhere in the United States.

This is the most versatile option in our lineup and a strong choice for barndominiums, commercial buildings, large garages, and agricultural structures. A few standout advantages:

  • Bolt-together components with no welding, cutting, or modifications needed
  • Detailed installation instructions and videos included -- a genuine DIY-friendly option
  • Building and foundation engineering included
  • 45-year warranty
  • Delivery included to all 48 states
  • Can accommodate a second-floor mezzanine

The main trade-off is that professional installation is not included in the kit price. If you plan to hire a crew, budget for erection labor separately.

Cold Formed is the sweet spot for buyers who want a serious, engineered structure without stepping up to the cost and complexity of Red Iron.

What Is Red Iron?

Red Iron buildings use heavy I-beam columns and rafters anchored to a pre-cast anchor plate in a slab or pier. This is the heavy-duty solution for large structures spanning more than 60 feet wide and the best value per square foot at that scale.

If you are building a riding arena, large commercial facility, agricultural warehouse, or any structure that needs to span serious distance without interior support columns, Red Iron is the right frame.

Key advantages:

  • Can span 100 feet wide and beyond
  • Best price point for structures over 80 feet wide
  • Engineered for any wind or snow load requirement

A few things to plan for:

  • Foundation engineering is not included in the price
  • Lead times can be longer during peak season
  • Some welding and modifications may be required on site

Red Iron is not the starting point for small projects, but for large builds it is the most capable and cost-efficient frame system available.

So Which One Is Right for You?

Here is a simple way to think about it:

  • Small structure, up to 30 feet wide -- Tube Steel
  • Mid-size build, 30 to 80 feet wide, DIY-friendly or barndominium -- Cold Formed
  • Large commercial or agricultural structure, 60 feet wide or more -- Red Iron

Still not sure? That is exactly what our design specialists are here for. Every project is different, and the right frame depends on your size, location, intended use, and local engineering requirements.
