Why Size Is the Most Important Decision You'll Make

Every other decision in a metal building project — frame type, finish level, foundation design — flows from the size. Get the size wrong and you either run out of space within a year or two, or you overbuild and spend money you didn't need to. Neither outcome is good. The good news is that sizing a metal building correctly is straightforward when you think through a few key questions before you order.

Start With Intended Use, Not Square Footage

The most common mistake buyers make is starting with a number — "I want a 40x60" — without working backwards from what they actually need the building to do. Before you pick a size, answer these questions:

  • What is going inside the building, and how much floor space does it realistically require?
  • Do you need room to move around equipment, vehicles, or materials — or just to store them?
  • Do you anticipate adding more equipment, inventory, or workspace in the next three to five years?
  • Will there be a separate office, bathroom, or mezzanine inside the building?
  • How many doors do you need, and where do they need to go?

The answers to these questions will get you much closer to the right size than picking a number off a price sheet.

Common Uses and the Sizes That Work

Here is a practical breakdown of how use cases map to building sizes:

Personal garage or hobby shop (1 to 3 vehicles) -- A 30x40 is the most popular size for a two to three car garage or basic hobby shop. It gives you 1,200 square feet of floor space — enough for vehicles, a workbench, and basic storage. If you want a lift or plan to work on multiple vehicles at once, consider stepping up to a 30x50 or 40x40.

Agricultural storage and equipment -- Farm equipment runs large. A standard tractor with implements can require a door opening of 14 to 16 feet wide and 14 feet tall just to get inside. A 40x60 or 50x80 is a common starting point for agricultural storage, with many buyers opting larger once they account for seasonal overflow and extra implements.

Workshop or small commercial space -- A 40x60 gives you 2,400 square feet, which works well for a serious woodworking shop, auto body operation, or light commercial use. If you need a small office or bathroom built in, factor that into your square footage — interior partitions eat into your usable floor area.

Barndominium -- Barndominiums typically combine a living area with a garage or utility space. A 40x60 or 50x80 footprint is common, with the living portion typically occupying one end and the utility bay the other. Clear-span framing means no interior columns interrupting the layout.

Large commercial or industrial -- At this scale, buildings typically start at 60x100 and go up from there. Red Iron construction is the right frame for spans over 60 feet wide, offering the best value per square foot at large dimensions.

Width vs. Length: Which One Matters More?

Width determines your frame type and has the biggest impact on cost. Every frame type has a maximum width it can span economically — Tube Steel tops out around 30 feet, Cold Formed goes to 60 to 80 feet, and Red Iron can span 100 feet or beyond. Length is more flexible and easier to extend later, though adding on to a metal building after the fact is never as clean or affordable as getting the right size upfront.

A good rule of thumb: size the width for what you need now, and add length for future growth.

Don't Forget Clearance Height

Square footage tells you how much floor space you have. Clearance height tells you how much of it you can actually use. Common mistakes include:

  • Ordering a building with a standard eave height that won't accommodate a lift or tall equipment
  • Underestimating how much vertical space racking or shelving systems require
  • Forgetting that a mezzanine cuts the clearance height of the lower level

Standard eave heights run 10 to 14 feet for most residential and light commercial builds. Agricultural and commercial projects often spec 16 feet or higher. If you have any doubt, go taller — adding height at order time costs far less than modifying a structure after the fact.

Build in a Buffer

The most consistent feedback from metal building owners is that they wished they had gone bigger. A building that feels generous on day one tends to feel tight within three to five years as equipment, inventory, and projects expand to fill the available space. If you are between two sizes, the larger one is almost always the right call.
