Metal Garage Kits: What You Get, What to Expect, and How to Choose the Right One

September 30, 2026

What is a metal garage kit?

A metal garage kit is a pre-engineered steel building package — frame, roof panels, wall panels, trim, and fasteners — designed to be assembled on a prepared concrete slab. No custom fabrication on site. No welding. The components are cut and punched at the factory and arrive ready to bolt together.

The appeal is straightforward: faster than stick-built construction, lower maintenance over time, and engineered to meet local wind and snow load requirements from the start.

What's included in a standard kit

Most metal garage kits include:

  • The structural steel frame (tube steel or cold-formed, depending on the kit)
  • Roof and wall panels
  • Trim and flashing
  • Fasteners and hardware
  • Anchor bolts for the foundation connection
  • Engineered drawings for permit submission

What's not included: the concrete slab, labor, insulation, doors, windows, electrical, and plumbing. Those are line items you'll price separately with local contractors.

Choosing the right size

Metal garage kits work best at modest widths — typically 12 to 60 feet wide. Common sizes and what they support:

  • 12x20 — single car, tight fit, basic covered storage
  • 24x30 — two-car garage with room to move around
  • 30x40 — two to three cars plus a workbench or storage area
  • 40x60 — four cars, a workshop, or a combination of both

If you're sizing for a workshop, equipment storage, or hobby space, add 25% to whatever you think you need. You'll use it.

Framing options: tube steel vs. cold-formed

Most garage kits ship with either tube steel or cold-formed steel framing. Both are bolt-together systems with no welding required.

  • Tube steel — square hollow section frames, slightly heavier, good for structures up to 30 feet wide
  • Cold-formed — C-channel framing, engineered for mid-size spans up to 60 to 80 feet wide, the most common choice for residential garage kits

For anything wider than 60 feet, you're moving into red iron (I-beam) territory. See a full breakdown of Silverline framing systems.

What to look for in a supplier

Not all kit suppliers are the same. Before you order:

  • Confirm the kit ships with stamped engineering drawings for your state
  • Ask whether the design is certified to your local wind and snow load requirements
  • Verify what the warranty covers — frame, panels, and finish separately
  • Check lead times; quality kits typically ship in 6 to 10 weeks
